If you’ve done the research, and have discovered that your area can successfully grow an orange tree, then you’re in luck. Orange trees are very difficult to grow, and need a certain environment to do so. Once you have taken the steps to purchase the correct tree, which should be one that is container-grown, you’re on your way to your orange tree’s success.
Successfully Planting an Orange Tree
An orange tree needs the proper location before it can be planted. This includes the soil that is well drained and an area that gets a lot of sun. Keep your orange tree approximately fifteen feet away from any other trees, buildings, power lines, drain fields and septic tanks. Ideally, you want your orange tree standing alone, away from anything else.
If you are in an area that has more of a cooler climate, plant your orange tree facing a south wall. This helps to provide extra warmth, which is needed. Remove all weeds and grass, they will take away nutrition, from where you are going to be planting the tree.
If you live in an area that has clay soil, then you are going to need to do a drainage test. Dig a hole that is around a foot deep and fill it with water. If you can see water the next day, plant your tree on a raised bed or a mound.
Growing Healthy Orange Trees
The key to a successful orange tree is picking the right area, giving it the right amount of care, and the perfect amount of sun. If you take the time to plant it correctly, then you are on your way to a bountiful harvest and lots of fresh orange juice in the mornings!
